Proper waste management has become one of the regulator’s principal concerns, to the point that administrative regulation in this area now constitutes a distinct sector in its own right, separate from general environmental law, due to both the number and specificity of the applicable rules and the significance of the issues they raise.

The rēgula team has decades of experience advising operators in this sector, as well as other businesses required to manage the waste generated by their production processes. We assist our clients in their dealings with the competent authorities and with the entities managing collective extended producer responsibility schemes in areas such as packaging, glass, lighting equipment, tires, and used oils, among others.

We have particularly extensive experience in healthcare waste management. We advise several of the sector’s leading operators, as well as the business associations representing their interests. We have also participated in initiatives to harmonize the regulatory framework in this area, which is marked by fragmentation and complexity.

We are also especially active in the municipal waste management sector, supporting several of the main operators in their contractual relations with local authorities responsible for the provision of these services.

In addition, we have taken part in the legal structuring of major public-private partnership projects in this field, as well as projects aimed at the recovery and valorization of specific types of waste, such as the production of biogas from wastewater treatment sludge.
